The Pastor's Perspective for Sunday, August 25th, is now online at Wellspring: A Journal of Christian Poetry.

"... We celebrate and serve the God of light, and yet so often we don't know what to do with all the darkness." ~Pastor Mike Kozowski

The Kalevala

So, I went to the library today and picked up a copy of the Kalevala in English (translated by Eino Friberg). I don't know if I will read the entire thing, but I will at least skim it.

It begins with "Runo 1: Creation and the Birth of Vainamoinen"
"I am wanting, I am thinking/To arise and go forth singing,/Sing my songs and say my sayings,/Hymns ancestal harmonizing,/Lore of kindred lyricking./In my mouth the words are melting;/Utterances overflowing/To my tongue are hurrying,/Even against my teeth they burst."

Plus, I picked up another book of Finnish Poems edited and translated by Kieth Bosley called Skating on The Sea.

Excerpt from "Finnish Sonnet" by A. Oksanen:

Old Vainamoinen could not have believed
that one among our singers now responds
to the great Sonnet, and within its bonds
sings what by heroes would be well received.

Then I found the Science Fiction section at the library and brought home two other books:

The Fortunate Fall by Raphael Carter--(premise) Maya Andreyeva is a "camera," a reporter with virtual-reality broadcasting equipment implanted in her brain. What she sees, millions see; what she feels, millions feel.

Interface Masque by Sheriann Lewis--(premise) In the ancient and future city of Venice, poised above the drifting tides of [its] canals, is the House Sept-Fortune: a guild specializing in the making and breaking of data systems. Cecilie is a senior apprentice in Sept-Fortune, on the brink of her adult career. It is time for Cecilie's last test, the one that will prove her mastery of her profession and end her apprenticeship. But she has not anticipated the nature of the test that will be required of her.

Music

After a trip to the library earlier this week, I brought home several CDs:

Holy Bible: Old Testament--The Statler Brothers. A fun walk though the OT in song. Features songs relating happenings from Genesis through the fiery furnace

Rock My Soul--Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver. This band is simply the best bluegrass gospel band around! My favorites on this album are "Rock My Soul," "Sweet Chariot," "Jesus Gave Me Water," "Jesus I'll Never Forget." DL&Q albums are available from Sugar Hill Records.

Timeless--various artists. This is a tribute album to Hank Williams. Artists include: Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Ryan Adams, Johnny Cash, and others.

Speak His Name--James Blackwood Quartet. Includes "What Kind of Christian are You?" and "I've Got That Old Time Religion."

Crown of Jewels--Randy Scruggs and friends. The friends include Travis Tritt, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rosanne Cash. Songs include "A Soldier's Joy," "Amie," "City of New Orleans."

Someday--Crystal Gayle. Featuring "Anchor Deep," "He'll Be There," and "Where Dear Friends Never Part," as well as an "I Saw the Light" an "I Believe" medleys

Rosanne Cash--Hits 1979-1989 I was never a big fan of Roseann Cash, but I sure do like her rendition of "Tennesse Flattop Box" which I think is a remake of one of her Father's songs (Johnny Cash).

Friday Five

1. What is your current occupation? Is this what you chose to be doing at this point in your life? Why or why not? I am a stay-at-home Mom. Yes, this is what I chose to be doing at this point in my life. Actually, I quit working 14 years ago. I may go back to work in the future if financial needs dictate it.

2. If time/talent/money were no object, what would your dream occupation be? Writing--poetry and fiction-- and gaining acknowlegement for it.

3. What did/do your parents do for a living? Has this had any influence on your career choices? Dad was a logger, Mom a Regsitered Nurse. I never had any disire to be a logger, but I did go to community college and get my license as a Practical Nurse.

4. Have you ever had to choose between having a career and having a family? No. I've been blessed in that staying home with husband and foster children has been a choice I could easily make.

5. In your opinion, what is the easiest job in the world? What is the hardest? Why? The easiest job in the world would be a movie reviewer. The hardest job is raising children.

The Kalevala in English translation

Beyond the Rings

Beyond the Rings is a video produced by National Geographic Society. It is about the things that influenced JRR Tolkein's Lord of the Rings trilogy. One of the most fascinating things I learned was that Tolkein was strongly influence by a book of Finnish poems called The Kalevala. In fact, Tolkein taught himself Finnish in order to read the poems in their original tongue. Not only did aspects of the poems influence the development of some of Tolkein's characters, such as Gandalf, but a certain region dialect of the Finnish language itself influeced the development of Tolkein's Elven language. I find this beyond cool because my family heritage is largely Finnish.

I took the What Mythological Creature Are you? test by !

Erin who?

The Erinyes (aka, The Furies) are the three goddesses of revenge (created by drops of Uranus’ blood). They punished those who escaped or defied public justice. The three sisters are women with fiery eyes and dogs’ heads wreathed with serpents. Their whole appearance is terrific and appalling. The sisters are sometimes called the daughters of night and are brought about by murder, perjury, ingratitude, disrespect, harshness, and the laws of hospitality. Megaera, Alecto, and Tisiphone are impartial and impersonal and they pursue wrongdoers until the sinners are driven mad and die.

(Source: "Megaera."Encyclopedia Mythica)

Who? Me? I don't even kill the common housespider that scurries across our living room floor every night, though I have been known to swat a fly or two.

And Speaking of Shakespeare (you know who you are)

Go on over to Literature Online and join the "Sonnet-A-Day" mailing list. Apparently, Shakespeare wrote more than 150 of 'em, and by joining the list you can read them one at a time.

My Sister's Pics

My sister didn't tell me how serious her hobby of taking photos has become--the scamp! They are really quite good (true, even though I may be a bit biased). Check them out by clicking the above link.

This or That Tuesday

1. CandyLand or Chutes and Ladders? Neither. It was The Game of Life.

2. Barbie or GI Joe? My sister and I had Barbies. Two Barbies and her best friend Midge. Since we didn't have a Ken doll, one of the Barbies had to substitute for the boyfriend.

3. Play-Doh or Silly Putty? I think we had Play-Doh one time. For some reason, it wasn't around very long.

4. Lincoln Logs or Tinkertoys? My brother's had one or the other, or both. I don't quite recall. That was a long time ago.

5. The Game of Life or Monopoly? The Game of Life was a blast. Especially when we got to go to my cousins' house to play it.

6. Etch-a-Sketch or Lite-Brite?Etch-a-Sketch, no contest.

7. The Slinky: metal or plastic? Metal. Who would want the plastic one?

8. Easy-Bake Oven or Sno-Cone Machine? Neither. Were these toys even around when I was a child?

9. Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars? Again, both. It was the brothers' thing.

10. Spirograph or Paint-by-Numbers?
Spirograph, though after the first day it was so boring it was probably never played with again.

Two for Tuesday

1. Other than a family member, is there someone (you don't have to name names, of course) that you've never been able to forget? Why him or her? That is too personal, and as a love story, not very interesting to anyone but me.

2. What incident -- either one that happened to you personally or something that you witnessed but weren't directly a part of -- have you not been able to truly put behind you? Why not? When I was about five years old, my dad wrecked his car on the way home. I remember him coming into the house, bleeding from a wound to his forhead. As I recall, he was drunk and wanted Mom to take responsibility for wrecking the car.

We have ribbons

Of course, the other big reason to go to the fair was to check our exhibits. I got a blue ribbon on my bell collection and each of the boys got a blue ribbon on one or more of theirs (art and hobbies). Good for us!

Travis Tritt

His show last night was absolutely amazing! He is a very good performer and kept the audience clapping, whooping, and hollering. It was a lot of fun and I'm glad we went. It is the first big name concert the boys have gone to and they were duely impressed. I think going to the show fair each year may become a regular thing.

Not only did Tritt do a remarkable show, he gave us a 40 minute encore that included tributes to Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash. It was great!

Travis Tritt's Offical Web Site

Mount St. Helens VolcanoCam The mountain is approximately 40 miles southeast of where we live, so information about it is always interesting to us. My husband was outside on the morning it erupted and so saw the initial eruption.

Monday Memories

Do you remember learning to ride a bike? Or roller skates? Or a scooter? You must have learned to ride something!
And there's bound to be a story in there somewhere. Share with us please.

A Happy Memory
(Copyright 2002)

Dad's hands
holding the bike
and me five years old
trusting he would never
let me fall.

I've got rice cooking in the microwave...

Not really, that is just the opening line to my favorite Travis Tritt song. I have tickets to his show tomorrow night at our county fair. That is going to be fun. What isn't going to be so much fun is spending the entire day at the fair because the children have those "ride all day for one price" bracelets.

So, the plan is to get to the fair when it opens at 10 AM, look around at the exhibits to see if what we entered won ribbons (of course they did, ours were the best entries), then at 12 AM they will hit the midway and the rides leaving poor old Aunt Debby to wander around and try to amuse herself until 7:30 PM. Actually, I'm going to sit with the Junior Art from 12:30 to 3:30, then we all have to go home so the boys can do their paper routes. Then we'll get back to the fair at around 5. The boys will hit the rides again and I will check out any exhibits I missed that morning.

It should be fun. Maybe it won't reach 100 degrees tomorrow like the weatherman is predicting.

Monday Mission

1. If I could guarantee that the Fashion Police would not lay the smackdown on you, which favorite out-of-style article of clothing do you wish you could wear right now? The bellbottoms I had in the late 60s (groovy), or any of the items of clothes I had when I weighed 100 pounds less than I do right now (and still fit into them, of course).

2. In your opinion, who is famous but shouldn't be? Tiny Tim, I guess.

3. Are there any new movies or TV shows that you are forward to this fall?
The children are looking forward to Dinotopia. I hope ABC has another installment of The Mole. I don't know of any new shows I'm looking forward to. I have to try to remember to pick up the TV Guide's Fall Preview issue, if I haven't missed it already.

4. If you had a time machine that you could use only one time (there and back), where would you go and what would you do? I'd like to hear Jesus' "Sermon on the Mount" in person.

5. What cologne of perfume do you like to wear? Which brand do you prefer that your partner wear? My current favorite is Tabu. My husband wears Jovan Musk.

6. Do you recall your first "French kiss?" Tell me about how that felt, and how it came about. Do you like them? Yes. Yuck! No comment.

7. Excluding your partner...If you had the opportunity, who would you most like to French kiss? Puhleeze. It's my husband or nobody.

BONUS: Can't you see that it's late at night? What's time got to do, got to do with it? What's time but a second hand emotion?

This week's comment question: What is your favorite thing to drink? I like vanilla milk shakes, made with real ice cream, of course.

I guessed right!

One of our favorite shows is The Mole. It is a game show wherein contestants play games to earn money, but one of the players is The Mole--whose job it is is to sabotage the games so players will lose money. The winner of the game is the player who identifies The Mole after the last episode.

I guessed Bill and I was right. My husband and one of the kids also guessed Bill. One child guessed Dorothy, and the other two guessed Heather.

This was the second installment of The Mole. I guessed the correct player the first game, too. That's two for two. I wonder if ABC will do a third installment. I hope so. The game is a lot of fun and not rauncy like some of the other "survivor" type shows (which we don't watch).

Friday Five

1. Do you have a car? If so, what kind of car is it? I drive a 95 Dodge Caravan. Before that I had an 88 VW Jetta. I really loved that car, but when the foster kids came to live with my husband and me we quickly outgrew that 4 passenger car. We are a six passenger family now.

2. Do you drive very often?
Yes, everyday nearly. If it isn't something one of the children has to do, it's groceries or other errands.

3. What's your dream car? I don't think I have a dream car, but I plan on acquiring another Volkswagen as soon as we become a four passenger family again (either a new Jetta or Bug).

4. Have you ever received a ticket? Sure, I got caught speeding a couple of times.

5. Have you ever been in an accident? When I was seventeen I lost control of my car on black ice. The car and I ended up in a pond. It wasn't very deep, thank God, but it pretty well ruined the car. That was a 1965 Impala, my first car.

This or That

1. What's your personal clothing style...trendy or classic? Neither. I buy what I like regardless of where it fits into any particular catagory.

2. Do you shop for designer names or stick with the more generic brands?
Designer names don't mean a lot to me. I buy what I like regardless of labels.

3. Work clothes: dressy or casual? I don't work outside the home, I am always casual.

4. Days off style: dressy or casual? See #3

5. Women: high heels or flats? Men: Wing-tips or work boots? Flats, usually sandals because shoes hurt my feet. I am always barefoot at home and if I could I would be barefoot away from home. I hate shoes.

6. Do you have a large wardrobe, or just a few carefully selected pieces?
I have a large wardrobe, though I end up wearing only a small portion of it on a regular basis.

7. Do you shop for clothing at stores or from catalogs/internet? Catalogs and stores

8. Are most of your clothes dry-clean only or machine-washable? Machine washable, please!

9. You buy an article of clothing and realize it is all wrong for you when you get home. Return or keep it?
Return it. My favortie department store has a 90 day return, no questions asked policy.

10. Hats: yes or no? No, but I saw some really cute vintage hats at a garage sale the other day. I was tempted, but didn't buy any of them because I knew I wouldn't wear them.

Two for Tuesday

1. Describe one of the best gifts you've ever received. I'm an October baby. That means my birthstone is an opal. I always wanted an opal ring, and for Christmas four years ago my husband gave me one. It has 8 opals in it, and each one is just gorgeous!

2. Describe a gift that you gave to someone else that was a really big hit. Gee, I don't really know. I think the most special gift I gave was a booklet of recipes I made based on recipes taken from my Grandma's recipe box. I wrote the booklet after she passed away a few years ago. The booklet also contained a family tree going back to my great-grandparents. Everyone in my immediate family received a copy of the booklet, including my grown nieces and nephews.

So much to write, so little time

I do agree with Betty that writing in these blogs takes up a lot of time that could be used for creative writing. I haven't writen a short story or poem in a couple of months! Shame on me, though I did get the current issues of my Phoenix APA zine and The Force APA zine done and in the mail. Hooray for me. Of course if YOU want to see those efforts YOU will have to join the said APAs, which are a lot of fun BTW.

Anyway, here is another one for Betty just because I am an enabler and will she be able to resist yet another mindless blog thingee.

Monday Memories

Falling Down

Did you ever fall down, either badly or not, but have feelings of some sort, pain, embarrassment, fear, whatever, totally overwhelm you? Tell us about falling down, or up.. or walking into a pole... Several years when I was leaving the public library (one of my most favorite places in town), I stepped off the curb and fell right onto my left knee. That was the single most painful experience of my life, until the think scabbed over. That hurt even worse. Even today my knee hurts sometimes and I believe it is because of that fall.

Monday Mission

1. Ever considered just deleting your Blog and not doing it anymore? What prompted that and what stopped you? No, I haven't considered deleting it, though my other Blog gives me a pain sometimes. It's my weight loss diary and currently I'm not losing weight, so it is painful to have to journal there and admit that I am blowing my diet.

2. How about a quick review of the last movie you saw? The last movie I saw was on AMC. It was "Hatari" starring John Wayne. I am not a huge JW fan, but this movie is great. It is about a group of people in Africa who are wildlife hunters in the respect that they fill orders for zoos and such. For example, during the course of the movie they catch a zebra, giraffe, monkies and a rhino. An attractive woman photographer joins the group and becomes the love interest for Wayne. The movie was filmed in the 60s and has action, humor, romance, drama. It's just a very good movie.

3. What's your favorite gadget? Are you lusting for any new ones? Will you ever be satisified??? My favorite gadget would have to be the computer. I am lusting to get it updated since I am still using Windows 95 and am getting short of memory.

4. Saturday night I played "UNO" for the first time in years, I mean it has been over 10 years since I played it. It was great fun, but it really made me want to learn how to play Backgammon again. What "table game" do you enjoy playing most with other people? Have you played it lately? My favortie game is "Upwords." It is a Scrable-like game but more so since you can build words "up" on existing words by placing, for example an "D" on the "L" in Love to make "Dove." It is also the most recent game I've played. Overall, I prefer word games, though "Phase 10" is also a favorite.

5. About a year ago I was obsessed with loosing weight, and I dropped pretty low before I got a handle on things (I've actually gained about 8 pounds of it back, and it is still a struggle sometimes to not try to loose it). Thankfully, I like fattening sweets and buttery popcorn too much to live like that for too long. Have you ever been obsessed with something so much that it was close to causing you physical or mental harm? If not, have you known anyone else who has? I'm about 100 pounds overweight. That's not healthy.

6. Did you grow up in a family or community that displayed racist or prejudice attitudes? Did it influence you in any way, either toward or away from those views? How did you manage to avoid it, or did you? I don't remember my family displaying racial prejudices. People are people after all.

7. Good grief, I am starving! You got anything to eat around here? Sorry, we just finished off a pot of Hamurger Helper Cheeseburger Maccaroni. I'm afraid their aren't any leftovers.

BONUS: What did you tell them?
I told them to get their faces washed so they don't have to do it later when we have no time for that sort of thing.

This week's Comment Question: What browser and version number are you using?
IE 5.5 (or something like that).

You are Spaceman Spiff!
Zounds! You are the intrepid Spaceman Spiff, the engaging explorer ensconsed in an unending universe of exotic and evil extraterrestrials! You're brave, but you should give that dictionary a rest.
Take the What Calvin are You? Quiz by contessina_2000@yahoo.com!

Saturday Scruples (a day late, but whatever)

1. You manage a TV station. Your female news anchor doesn't look the way she did 15 years ago. The ratings are falling. Do you replace her? No, I try to find out why the ratings are dropping, not just assume its because the female anchor is older. She didn't age overnight you know, besides, maybe it's the obnoxious male anchor that is causing the ratings to tumble.

2. You're traveling in Uzbeckistan when you're invited to a feast by shepherds. You're given the sheep's eyeball, the greatest delicacy. To refuse it is the greatest insult. Everyone's watching. Do you gulp it down? Sure. It's probably delicious.

3. After months, the charge for your new TV doesn't show up on your credit card statement. Do you report the oversight? Yes. To not report it is stealing.

Sarah Coventry

I collect Sarah Coventry jewelry. I remember in the 70s, Mom would have home parties to sell Coventry jewerly. I wish I had kept the stuff we bought at those parties because it is becoming more and more collectible as the blurb below states:
Emmons, no longer in business, was founded by Charles Stuart in Newark, NY. He also founded it's sister company, Sarah Coventry. There is a thorough and interesting discussion of this manufacturer in Lillian Baker's "Fifty Years of Collectible Fashion Jewelry, 1925 - 1975. According to Lillian Baker----the Emmons Co. was Incorporated in Feb. 1949 and then Sarah Coventry came into being 8 months later-It was only sold at home parties---mostly in the 50's and is now collectible and getting scarce.

Sarah Coventry had a Lifetime Guarantee...the cards stated "may be sent back for repair to: P.O. Box 7899, Warwick, RI 02887. Please include handling charge of 1.50." I'm not sure if this is still being honored. Sarah Coventry discontinued operations and home parties in 1984. The better sets and pieces are expected to rise in price and every collector should have a few pieces of Sarah Coventry in their collection.

Anyway, I always look for this vintage jewelry when I am out and about at garage sales. Today I found a nice leaf pin. It is goldtone and in a filigree pattern. Very pretty. The websites I found put most brooches in the 30 dollar price range. I paid 50 cents for this one today. Good for me!

This website sells only Sarah Coventry Jewelry.

Friday Five

1. What is your lineage? Where are your ancestors from? Finn on my mother's side, German and Swiss on my Father's.

2. Of those countries, which would you most like to visit? Finland. I know I have quite a few relatives there. I'd have to find out from other relatives who they actually are, but...

3. Which would you least like to visit? Why? I think all three would be wonderful places to visit.

4. Do you do anything during the year to celebrate or recognize your heritage? No, we do nothing special. I think it is sad that so often ethnic traditions fade away during subsequent generations.

5. Who were the first ancestors to move to your present country (parents, grandparents, etc)? Great Grandparents on my Mom's side. I'm not sure on my Father's, great or great-great grands.

Typical Thursday

We had a pleasant outing today. We pack a little picnic lunch and went down to Winolequa Park in Winlock. The two younger boys played on the playground equipment and the two older boys and I pitched a couple of games of horseshoes. Victor beat me 23 to 20. Jacob beat me 21 to 6!!! What happened there? I just was off kilter, I suppose.

I also took several pictures of the boys posed on the various playground equipment. I do a calendar for their California grandparents each year. I hope I got enough good photos now to do the calendar. I also hope I got one nice enough to use for photo I do every two years that I give to the family at Christmas time. I think actually it was due this Christmas past, but I didn't have a photo I liked.

We stayed a couple of hours at Winolequa and then came back by way of Napavine. We stopped at the park there, I think it's called the Mamye Shaddock park now. It is a nice little park and very prettily landscaped with plenty of benches in the shade. We stayed there about an hour and Jacob and I played another game of 'shoes. I beat him this time. 21 to 17. Can't let him get too big of a head!

I think tomorrow we are going to do some yard sales. This Saturday is Christopher's birthday. He wants cash instead of presents so he can get his all day ride bracelet for the fair (we're going on the 13th and since I bought the tickets to see Randy Travis, they have to pay for their own rides), so all I have to do is bake a birthday cake. I bought the mix for that at Rejos discount grocery a few days ago. It's German Chocolate with caramel frosting.

I hadn't been in Rejos before. They have some pretty good buys. I bought 9 oz boxes of Post Raisin Brand for 99 cents each.

Saturday we will probably go out to the Sportsmans' Show at Onalaska. We haven't been to that illustrious event yet. I see in the paper that the High School is having an all class potluck picnic. Maybe we will go to that, too. Even though I didn't graduate with my class at Onalaska ( I had transferred to Napavine in my Junior year), they always invite me to the reunions. I have never gone, though.

Then Saturday evening we are going to Taco Bell for dinner because that's where Christopher wants to go for his birthday dinner.

Other than that, nothing much going on. We took Skipper to the vet yesterday for his annual checkup and booster shots. He is always so eager to go ride in the car with us, but it seems we never take him with us except when he is going to the Vet. I wonder what he thinks about that. I told Jim we need to start taking him places so he will get used to it. He is five years old now and settled down somewhat, well as much as a Schipperke ever gets, I think.

We pickup up a couple of Poirot mysteries from the Library yesterday. We watched the one, "Peril at End House." It had us all fooled as to who the murderer was. A nice Agatha Christie twist that one was. I think I only saw this episode one time previously when it was on PBS. I didn't remember much about it.

The other we will watch tonight. It is "The ABC Murders." We've seen that one three or four times. It was also the first Christie mystery I ever read. Mom had it in a volume of "The World's Greatest Mysteries," or something like that. I do remember it was a two volume set and had gray covers.
